Technology has opened many doors for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing community over the last several decades, but there is still a ways to go when it comes to emergency situations where a Video Phone (specialized phone in which a sign language interpreter is visible on a screen) or TTY (text telephone) is unavailable. The City and County of Denver recognized the importance for those with hearing loss to be able to reach Denver 911 in emergency situations. In a collaborative effort with State and City agencies, a ten digit text number (303-513-6909) and email address(denver911@denvergov.org) has been developed for Deaf and Hard of Hearing Denver residents to reach 911. This system is an interim solution until a statewide Text-to-911 system is in place.
